Weed and scout while the plants are still small
Carrot, onion, and beetroot sit small for weeks. Weeds steal water, light, and root shape in that window. One late hoeing does not give back a lost stand. Cabbage and potato also hide early damage at the growing point and on the underside of leaves.
Walk a method, not a mood: same path, young plants first, notes on hotspots. Remove weeds while they are small and the crop is still easy to see. Destroy badly hit plants instead of hoping they recover into a marketable unit.
If the bed looks clean from the path and ruined in the row, you scouted too late.
